Small, green businesses that make children’s products are facing their doom. The Consumer Product Safety Imporvement Act will go into effect on February 10, 2009. This act provides an important service regulating lead and phthalates in children’s products. However, the law will unecessarily punish small, green businesses and put an end to many of the healthiest, safest children’s products because it does not distinguish between the big businesses that violated consumer trust through cheap and sub-standard manufacturing practices and those smaller, sustainably-oriented businesses that have voluntarily met the highest, safest standards.
The law goes so far as to make ANY children’s item that does not have certification contraband after February 10th. It won’t even be legal to give to charity your child’s old winter coat or sell her old bicycle on Craigslist.
You can read more in my earlier blog on the subject and at the Hand Made Toy Alliance website. Also, you can VOTE to have this issue be one of ten brought before the Obama administration on election day. It’s easy to do, it only takes about 2 minutes and you can do it now. Please pass this message on to friends with children as well.
